In the Los Angeles area, there are several schools from which aspiring accountants and professionals can choose. This article looks at three public and private institutions, all within a 30-minute drive of the city center. Within the article is a table that lists some important facts about each school, giving students an easy way to compare them. There’s also a little information on two other L.A. area schools that offer accounting courses.

  • California State University – Los Angeles. about five miles from downtown, has an accredited college of business. It offers various accounting programs at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels as well as a certificate program. Students can minor in accounting.
  • Loyola Marymount University has bachelor’s and master’s programs in accounting. This school is almost 20 miles from central Los Angeles.
  • Located about three miles from downtown Los Angeles, the University of Southern California offers a minor in accounting as well as bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs.

California State University – Los Angeles

This university has several degree programs in accounting for students from a variety of educational backgrounds. Aspiring certificate students need to have a bachelor’s degree. Applicants to the master’s degree program should have a bachelor’s degree and GMAT scores.

Minor in Accounting

This program is designed for students who want to major outside of accounting. At least 24 course units are required. Students will need to take courses in survey of accounting, financial accounting, managerial accounting and intermediate financial accounting.

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration – Accounting

This program will prepare students for either public or managerial accounting workplaces. Students will learn about financial accounting, cost accounting, taxes, accounting systems and auditing. Lower-division courses like business computer systems, economics and legal business help students learn about business principles. Students will also learn about leadership skills for accountants and case studies in accounting.

Certificate in Accounting

This program is designed for those who want a career change into the accounting profession. Before formal admission to the program, students need to complete prerequisites in general business and accounting courses. The certificate program itself is comprised of 48 units in business communications, cost accounting, taxation, accounting information and other related topics.

Master of Science in Accounting

This degree program is suited for those who want to attain certification like the Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant and the Certified Internal Auditor. The program is split up into business, accounting, core and option courses. Students who already have a business or related degree program can waive the foundational courses. The core courses include auditing, seminars, accounting information systems and case studies. Students can choose from three options: accounting information systems, financial/public accounting and managerial/cost accounting.

Loyola Marymount University

This university offers an undergraduate major program and a graduate program in accounting for students. Applicants to the master’s degree program will need to have a bachelor’s degree and take prerequisites in business and accounting.

Bachelor of Science in Accounting

Students in this program will need to take courses in business, accounting and general education. Specific business courses include microeconomics, macroeconomics, business institutions and ethical decision-making models. Students will also take major courses like financial accounting, intermediate accounting and cost accounting.

Master of Science in Accounting

Both accounting and non-accounting majors can complete this graduate degree program. Students will be prepared to take the CPA licensure exam. The program has 30 units, and students will take courses like financial reporting, tax policy, accounting ethics and advanced audition.

University of Southern California

This university offers several accounting programs. Those applying to the master’s degree programs must have GMAT scores. Applicants planning to complete the Master of Business Taxation program part-time must have one year of work experience. Applicants to the PhD program should have a bachelor’s degree and GRE/GMAT scores.

Minor in Accounting

Only non-business students can take this program. Students will learn about the general nature of business and accounting, and they will need to complete at least 32 units. They will take courses in accounting, economic foundations for business, business finance and intermediate financial accounting.

Bachelor of Science in Accounting

Students in this undergraduate program can choose tracks in accounting, accounting information systems and graduate accounting. The graduate accounting track is designed for students who want to go on to a master’s degree program in accounting. All students are expected to take business foundation courses like accounting, business communication and business finance. Major courses in accounting may include financial reporting issues, assurance services and tax issues.

Master of Accounting

Students are not required to have an accounting or business major for this program. The curriculum will prepare students for CPA licensure, and students will also take advanced accounting courses and electives. The amount of courses in the program depends on students’ educational backgrounds. Students may take enterprise information systems, managing communication in organizations, assurance services and financial statement analysis.

Master of Business Taxation

Students in this degree program will gain advanced knowledge about the business and taxation. In addition to learning about tax legislation, students will also learn how taxes affect economics, accounting, politics and law. Students will be able to take the program part- or full-time.

Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting

Students can choose disciplines in financial accounting, tax accounting, auditing/corporate governance and managerial accounting. The program will take four or five years to complete. Students are expected to participate in research and teaching. Two comprehensive oral and written exams will also be required. Finally, all students must complete a dissertation defense.

Other School Options

Accounting courses are also offered at Woodbury University located a little over 15 miles away from downtown Los Angeles. Pacific States University also has accounting courses and is about four miles away from downtown.
