Westminster College of Salt Lake City
Students at Westminster are either “here to learn, or here to ski; often a combination of the two.” The student body is not especially racially diverse, with most students being “white, in shape, environmentally friendly, etc.” Still, “all students are unique and are individuals” and can be “anything from snow bro, hipster, intellectual, religious, atheist, or spoiled slacker.” In regards to political views, “while it may be fair to call Utah a ‘sea of conservatism,’ SLC certainly is not. Westminster reflects SLC’s more liberal leanings.” “The community is close-knit and supportive” and “nearly everyone skis or snowboards” or at least likes to “hike, rock climb, [and] camp.” Some students who are not big on outdoor sports can “feel like outsider[s].” As at many colleges, certain students “are more concerned about school while there are many who like to party and rely on their parents to pay their way while they slack off.” Overall this “wonderful mix” of students is the “best-kept secret around.” Westminster College is a place “where ski bums, overachievers and Mormons collide to make up an awesome, fun residential student body.”

Campus Facilities & Equipment
Classes are never more than a 5-minute walk away on the pristine, tree-filled 27 acres. The careful blend of architecture is illustrated by the newly completed Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory of Music and Theatre. The Gore School of Business, Aviation, and Entrepreneurship, one of the most technologically advanced business-education facilities in the nation, integrates innovative, new laboratories and state-of-the-art classroom facilities with the Center for Financial Analysis, offering real-time access to world market data, a behavioral simulation lab, and a flight simulation and testing center. The Flight Operations Center, which includes a state-of-the-art hangar, flight simulators, and fifteen new aircraft, is located at Salt Lake International Airport. The College recently opened a new state-of-the-art health and wellness center that includes a lap pool, exercise facilities, and a climbing wall and also houses the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Future plans include two additional facilities: a unique bilevel athletic field/parking garage structure and a new science center that promises to be one of the most innovative college science facilities in the west. Current facilities include major classroom buildings, multiple computer and presentation classrooms, a science building, an award-winning library, a ceramics studio, and a nursing laboratory. All students have Internet access and e-mail accounts, using a high-speed gigabit network. A secure student Web portal consolidates online e-mail, course, and registration services. Network connections abound in all classrooms, every residence-hall room, and library seat. Eighty percent of classrooms are set up for multimedia presentations. Technical support is available to students and faculty and staff members seven days a week.
Westminster is a place where “everyone looks forward to a good snow day.” Skiing and snowboarding are central features of student life, with “six resorts within a half hour drive of campus.” Students here are all about “working hard and getting to ski to reward yourself for the hard work.” Salt Lake City provides “many opportunities (professional, recreational, and cultural)” and the campus is only “fifteen minutes away from outdoor recreation areas.” On campus, “there are awesome student association run events!” Activities range from “spontaneous cupcake wars to international fests to dances to community service projects and everything in between.” “I love the small-campus feel and the fact that it has an amazing location in a safe neighborhood,” a Communications major reports. “The atmosphere on campus is my favorite part of the school,” says a neuroscience major. “It’s a really friendly, open, fun place to be.” Another student declares that “life is truly elevated at Westminster College.”

Westminster College in Salt Lake City is the only private, comprehensive liberal arts college in the state of Utah. In 2011, it earned a STARS Silver rating; and now it can add another honor—three-time recognition from The Princeton Review as one of the top Green Colleges. This relatively small college packs quite a green punch; not only is Westminster College a Charter signatory of the ACUPCC, its Environmental Center Director also served on the ACUPCC Implementation Liaison Steering Committee. Besides targeting a 2030 date for carbon neutrality, the college boasts a LEED Platinum Meldrum Science Center. What’s more, the Campus Master Plan calls for all major renovations going forward to seek LEED Silver. Westminster values renewable energy: 8 percent of campus electricity is derived from renewable sources. Westminster has been honored as a Blue Sky Visionary Partner for a major wind power purchase, and is an EPA Green Power Partner to boot! Looking for more environmental distinction? Westminster boasts an environmentally-themed residence hall floor for freshmen. Students can eat green—the college features an organic garden and chicken coop. Students power the environmental movement on campus by conducting research in various departments on topics such as recycling and transportation, running clubs such as Eco-Reps and the Roots Shoots, and attending courses on sustainability. The Career Center and Environmental Center provide green counseling to students who are interested in green careers.
