A word form our proprietor: “My name is John Lane – I am the proprietor of John Lane Business Consulting ‘JLBC’
I have been providing consulting and hands-on services to micro and small enterprises and other organisation types including local authorities and charities since 1991 and have been doing so, directly, as an independent specialist (i.e. normally not as a sub-contractor), since 1994. My own business is a micro business with myself as Proprietor plus one full time Employee and I am, personally, dually-based, with an office very close to Heathrow serving clients in the UK and Ireland while also serving my home based community in Sudbury and the greater East Anglian region of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire taking in, for example, Norwich, Lowestoft, Harwich, Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich, Bury St. Edmunds, Haverhill, Cambridge, Basildon, Southend and the nearby Enfield and East London Boroughs. Because I am an employer, I understand many of the issues that befall micro, small and medium sized businesses. My background was originally in manufacturing, industrial and production engineering, manufacturing (small batch) project management, productivity and management services.
I am supported by my colleagues:
- Trevor Walker AIIRSM (Hertford, Hertfordshire based) – since 2007 – my full time employee
- Kathryn Ebdon (Paddock Wood, Kent based) – since 2012 – my part-time Associate”

“. Since returning to self-employment in 1991 after five and a half years as the Southern Regional Operations Manager for the management and industrial engineering consultancy, Chinal Management Services (still based in Dudley, W.Midlands) I did a spell of partial sub-contracting until 1994 when I became totally independent professionally AND married Martine – without whose tireless marketing and sales efforts in the 1990s, our business would not, I think, have easily survived the last 20 years. In 2007, my old primary school best pal Trevor Walker joined me to look after our health and safety consultancy business – I was buckling under the pressure the year up to that point. Looking back, I think Trevor and I were destined not to lose touch and to work together – it all started with jointly starting up a club and writing a comic at school – a very long time ago. In 2012, I crossed paths with Kathryn Ebdon – who, like Trevor, exactly mirrors my own philosophy of life and attitude to business. Its very hard, especially in consultancy, to find really good people (in all senses of the word) who you can also trust – but I count myself lucky indeed that I am surrounded by people with all of these qualities. “
John’s career began in, and his achievement of the IWSP (Institute of Work Study Practitioners – later becoming the IMS – Institute of Management Services) CERTIFICATE in WORK STUDY, was gained, in the 1970s.
John’s early career was spent in furniture manufacturing but developed rapidly in the 1980s through to the earlu 1990s, when he worked as a work study and industrial engineering contractor for a number of specialist agencies and consultancies in this field, also gaining his first experiences in QUALITY and HEALTH SAFETY management. He has worked on the ‘SHOP FLOOR’ in production, technical and office environments as well as holding supervisory and production management positions in both union and non-union working situations.
From the mid 1980s throuhg to the early 1990s, John was also formally trained in sales and sales management by a national industrial engineering and management services consulting and training group, and then promoted from his role as field based Practitioner to Regional Operations Manager, responsible to the Regional Director, for the development of the business through increased sales and by increasing the size of the region’s customer base. This new position also required the selection and recruitment of new field based practiitoners, the management of field operations and project management of some of the consultancy work undertaken by the company.
In the early 1990s, John began working as an independent contractor and then consultant, then forming his own business, initially providing industrial engineering and quality management services to a wide range of very large, medium and very small businesses and public authorities. During this period he gradually eliminated the need to work as a sub-contractor and in the mid-1990s was working direct to / for ALL his clients.
Since the mid-1980s John has tuned his skills and experience in Business Development, Sales, Quality, Health, Safety, Welfare, Environmental, Human Resource / Employment Management and Profit / Productivity Improvement in an unusually wide variety of industrial, commercial public sector organisations.
